Tracking a stolen PC for free

If you would like the option of tracking your PC,  Laptop or phone if it gets stolen but don't want to pay then your luck is in.

Prey is an Open Source anti theft solution that you can use to track up to 3 devices (up to 10 with the Pro Version), tracking is simple, just install the client and create an account and that's it.
If your device is stolen, simply visit the Prey project web page and set it as 'missing', it will immediately begin to search for the device, and as soon as it connects to the Internet, whether via Wifi, Lan or Mobile network, the device will begin to send you a report including:

• Screenshots from the Webcam (if you have one)
• Location information using a number of sources 
• Running Services, and files accessed etc
• IP Address, ISP etc

The report can be as comprehensive as you like, you can even set it to alert the 'new' owner that you are tracking them, but it's much more fun to silently track them.

One of the shortcomings compared to paid versions is that as it runs at a service, a disk wipe and rebuild of the PC will render it useless, but stats show that this rarely happens with most stolen tech, presumably as most Burglars would struggle to tie their shoes unaided so certainly won't be up to a PC rebuild. 

Make no mistake this is a well designed piece of software, and as it's free you have nothing to lose with trying it.
